What is ADD/ADHD?

ADD and ADHD are common neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by attention and impulse control difficulties. These symptoms put individuals at a higher risk of substance abuse disorders, either due to poor impulse control or as a means of coping with ADD/ADHD symptoms. While drug or alcohol use may provide individuals with momentary relief, using habit-forming substances creates a dangerous potential for addiction.

ADD/ADHD is best managed through a combination of talk therapy and prescription medication. When individuals cannot access these important services, they may search for another ‘solution’ in illicit drugs or alcohol. After becoming dependent on drugs or alcohol, attending a treatment program or inpatient rehabilitation center is often required to properly address and recover from addiction. Treatment programs provide clients with the tools and skills they need to overcome addiction and what they require to properly manage their ADD/ADHD symptoms.

The Effects of ADD/ADHD on the Mind

ADD and ADHD have a variety of different effects on the mind. ADHD has been shown to affect the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This section of the brain is responsible for judgment, emotional responses, and behavior. When this part of the brain is unable to function properly, a lack of alertness, shorter attention spans, and decreased work efficiency are often observed. Individuals with a dysfunctional prefrontal cortex may also have a hard time with their short-term memory, problems maintaining activities, and may be unable to appropriately identify distracting activities.

Getting Help With ADD/ADHD and Substance Abuse

Taking part in a rehabilitation program empowers individuals with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders like ADD/ADHD. During treatment, clients learn how to manage their co-occurring disorders and develop skills in identifying triggers, coping with cravings, and preventing relapses. After leaving treatment, individuals are equipped to deal with their mental health and substance abuse issues, allowing them to live full, happy lives free from addiction.
