Your life may not be what you want it to be at the moment. That’s okay, and through your recovery, you’ll begin to change into the person you want to be. Keeping your goals straight during this time can seem like a daunting task, and you may not even know what you want. That’s where building a visual representation of what you want out of life can help, and it all starts with one single image or quote that you feel inspired by.

What Is a Vision Board?

This is a visualization tool that can help your recovery. It’s used to help you maintain your focus by helping you clarify your goals. Each board is unique; you can place images or texts on your board, and they can represent anything you want out of life.

Here are a few things you might want to put on your board:

  1. Images of happy families, if you’re interested in repairing or having a good family dynamic
  2. Pictures of locations where you want to visit when you’re sober
  3. Phrases that help you focus on recovery even at the most difficult times
  4. Images of homes you would be interested in living in
  5. Pictures of hobbies or activities you love

Of course, each person’s collage on the board is different, so what you put on yours will be based on your life and goals for the future.

How Does a Creating a Visual Collage Help Your Focus?

These visual collages help you focus because you’re visually acknowledging your wants and needs. The boards themselves are said to be related to the law of attraction; this is the law that by displaying images, quotes, and pictures, you’re creating a visual representation of what you want to attract in life.

How does that attract good things to you? By looking at your collection of images and designing what you want, you can start to associate good feelings with that future. Seeing such positive images is a constant reinforcement of the future you want.

How Often Should a Vision Board Be Altered?

Just as you change, your board can change as well. It’s normal for groups to change their collections of images and text, or to create new boards, each year. However, you can also use your board for short-term goals and long-term goals, changing it whenever you feel it’s necessary. For instance, you might decide to have one board for one-year goals, while you could have another for 5 to 10-year goals.  If you like to work on your board and collage more often, remember that you can always add to it regularly.

Here’s a few ideas for when to change or add to your collection of images.

  1. You were looking through a magazine and saw a person who looked happy and had a beautiful smile. The image makes you feel good. That’s a good image to cut out and put on your board because you can visualize being happy and healthy.
  2. You decide that you’re ready to move on with your life and fall in love. You see a quote that suggests a positive and healthy romance. Cut it out, and pin it or stick it onto your board. You deserve that love and to be appreciated.
  3. You love animals but never had any. Maybe you want one in the future, but you’re not sure. You start looking at them and see a few that you love online in image searched; past those images onto your board. They make you happy and are something to look forward to in the future.

You can also change your images and text when necessary, whether that’s on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Maybe you achieve a goal that’s on your long-term goal board, so you feel that the goal should be eliminated. That’s great, and you can remove or cover up the images you associate with that goal with a new one.

Another thing to consider is that if you feel that you want more than just one collection of images, that’s fine. You can make as many as you want and that make you feel good. Your goals are important, and you can never have too many.
