When a person finds themselves entering into treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, the first step of the recovery process is typically a medical detoxification (detox) program. During a medically assisted or supervised detox program, the clients are given a safe space to rid their bodies of the toxins that have been built up internally as a result of substance abuse.
When a person has consistently consumed alcohol or drugs, their body becomes accustomed to having those substances present. When the amount of the substance present in the body is reduced or removed completely, the brain must adjust to the lack of the substance. This often causes withdrawal symptoms that can range from unpleasant to life-threatening. This is what makes detoxing under medical supervision so important. Medically assisted detox programs allow the client to receive necessary medical interventions that make the detox process easier.
